It was an important match to win with both teams 3 points away from finals qualification, and ranked 12 and 13th place on the ladder, opportunities to get back up are becoming limited.
The match began well for the Dwarves receiving and dealing a couple big hits in the first round, taking 2 linerats off the field. They caged up well, and kept the pressure on the Skaven gutter runners, who's superior leaping ability they had been warned about. The dwarves as well took an early casualty, which was uncommon, but fortunately they had a full side of 13 going into the match.
The cage progressed steadily, and though the Rats did a good job of making life difficult for the short legged dwarves, They had managed to get within scoring range by turn 7 before there cage began to dissipate, leaving a hole large enough for a rat to squeeze through. The blitz left White McMurphey on the ground, the ball bouncing. But the Veteran Snow Tacklebeard was close to hand and able to scoop the ball up, and run through a gap provided by the guards to push it over the line in the last turn of the first half.
The second half started with the Dwarves fielding a full side of 11, and the Skaven down to 9. This proved an ample amount of players, as they performed a textbook skaven flanking maneuver that left the dwarves little chance of stopping a 2 turn touchdown.
The dwarves received again, and by now some skaven players had recovered from their blows to rejoin the fileld. The dwarves took the ball deep, and rushed forward, clobbering skaven as they went. Some horrendously bad coaching choices came good, as dwarves made unlikely dodges past rat orges. The rat orge in fact was soon to be taken from the field after a troll slayer had his way with it, as would several more skaven during the course of the half. But the the skaven side had managed to loosen the ball, and make it bounce out of bounds. This was collected by a linerat, who ran into his own half to safety while waiting for the Skaven thrower to join him and take possession for a play that would no doubt end the Dwaves chances. It never got that far however. The dwarves were able to run the thrower down, and shortly thereafter run down the ball carrier. Meanwhile the gutter runners sitting deep in the Dwaven half were on the ground. The best way to get rid of rats is to stomp on them with heavy boots, and that's exactly what the Dwarves did. KO'ing both the remaining gutter runner receivers, Zeke was no where to be found on these occasions, some say it had something to do with the case of Dwarven Ale which had been left in the Umpires office. It was turn 6, and the Dwarves had managed to cage up around White McMurphey in scoring range, 3 Skaven remained on the filed, all of which were on the ground. White McMurphey always playing second fiddle to the talented Snow Tacklebeard decided to rush to the end zone and score a second touchdown rather than the wiser choice of running the clock down a turn. After all, with only 3 players how could the skaven possibly score, right?
with 2 turns remaining, from the dugout came two gutter runners the room no longer spinning for them. They lined up bravely against the dwarven line. The kick went high and right into the skaven throwers waiting arms. Out dodged the gutter runners. the thrower advanced and passed with accuracy. Two gutter runners against an entire dwarven team, but had the dwarves setup to forward? With a push or two they managed to get two players on each of the gutter runners, and blitz the ball carrier with a tackling Blocker. Looking for the stumble or crunch on one of two dice. they instead came up push back and both down, and then again on the re-roll. The block able gutter runner fended off the blows, and now just had to leap over the defenders head which he did easily to score an equalising touchdown.
This was a crucial game for both teams and a draw is probably not the best outcome. It could mean the difference between a place in the finals and not. The Black Plague suffered the permanent loss of a skilled Agile Stormvermin. But with enough in the bank to purchase a replacement. Walts Warriors come out with Snow McMurphey finally out from Whites shadow, and gaining a point of Strength.
